Three British referees have been selected to work at a number of prestigious Water Polo events including the LEN European Nations Trophies and the Women’s European Under 20s Championships.

The trio are among six referees qualified within the LEN Water Polo referee list and they now feature alongside the 190 registered referees from throughout Europe.

The referees; Andrew Allen, Tad Detko, Chris Freebury, Michael Jukes, Brian Littlejohn and Damien Taylor, now have the opportunity to work at all levels of LEN Water Polo competitions. CLICK HERE to see confirmed appointments for 2009.

The 190 referees have the opportunity, if selected, to travel throughout Europe with competitions taking place in Russia, Bulgaria, Greece and France throughout the summer.

Out of the six LEN referees, three are also qualified on the FINA list of referees and last year, Brian Littlejohn was selected to work as an official at the Beijing Olympic Games.

Chris Freebury, who was the first British referee to pass the LEN officials exam, will not only referee at the LEN Women’s European Nations Trophy in Manchester this summer but also at the FINA Junior men’s Championships later this year.

“I have been a qualified LEN referee for about 16 years now,” Freebury said. “I really enjoy it, I get a buzz from the events and I think it is great to make the most of opportunities that are offered to you.

“It is really good that Britain is hosting the LEN European Nations Trophy this summer and I am excited to be part of the event.”

Pool providers and local authorities are being invited to attend FREE roadshows which will show them how the ASA can help them deliver the government’s Free Swimming initiative and discover how they can secure more funding for adult swimming lessons.

The roadshows, which will be held in locations across the country, will also explain how the ASA will use its recent restructure to embark on an ambitious programme of improvement that will ultimately make a culture change in swimming.

During the day there will be an opportunity for delegates to meet the ASA’s new Director of Partnerships, the new County Swimming Coordinators and other colleagues of the ASA to hear about the ASA’s new strategy.

In addition, the event will launch the Free Swimming Lessons programme, which will be rolled out in partnership with local authorities participating in the government’s overall Free Swimming initiative.
Delegates will hear more about how, when and where the programme will operate and details of the significant financial support available from government via the ASA, including criteria for the investment and the application process.

Double Olympic Champion Rebecca Adlington has been named the winner of the 2009 Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award. 

Adlington amazed and delighted the swimming world when she won the 400m and 800m Freestyle in Beijing to become Britain's first female Olympic swimming champion in 48 years. 

In the 800m, she broke one of the oldest and most illustrious world records in sport.  Her time of 8 mins 14.10 secs was more than two seconds better than Janet Evans' 19-year-old world record which was set when Adlington was just six months old.  Adlington's two gold medals made her the most successful British swimmer in 100 years. 

Adlington, from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, received the Laureus Breakthrough Award from Laureus World Sports Academy member Sebastian Coe and Laureus Friend and Ambassador Kelly Holmes, herself a double Olympic gold medallist in 2004 in Athens.  Also there to congratulate Adlington was Edwin Moses, Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy.

Adlington received the Laureus statuette in East London when she visited the site of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, where she will be hoping to repeat her golden success in three years time. She said: "It is a real honour to win this Award, it's quite awe-inspiring when you realise who the 46 members of the Laureus Academy who voted actually are. To be recognised by the likes of British legends such as Sir Ian Botham, Sir Bobby Charlton, Lord Coe, Daley Thompson, Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, swimmers Mark Spitz and Dawn Fraser, is incredible. 

"It's a unique award, made even more flattering when you look at the names of the other sportsmen and women who were nominated, not to mention the previous three winners - Lewis Hamilton, Amelie Mauresmo and Rafael Nadal. The last year has been a fantastic experience and I hope my journey towards London 2012 is equally as enjoyable. Thank you so much."

Laureus World Sports Academy member Lord Coe, the Chairman of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee, said: "Beijing was an Olympic Games full of stunning individual exploits and Rebecca Adlington's performance was as good as any.  Her arrival on the scene as an Olympic champion, at just 19, was dramatic and refreshing and she thoroughly deserves to win the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award.

"What made Rebecca's success even more thrilling was it was unexpected.  A genuine surprise of the most delightful kind.  In the 400 metres Freestyle she became Britain's first female Olympic swimming champion for 48 years, and then she proved it was no fluke by doing it again in the 800 metres freestyle, breaking one of the oldest world records in the process.  Rebecca helped to make it a wonderful Olympics for Britain and we will all be hoping that she can do it again when the Olympic and Paralympic Games are held in London in 2012," added Coe.

British Swimming is inviting you to share your thoughts on the question of nationality and participation in national events.

The European Commission is launching a study in the near future to analyse the access non-nationals should have to individual competitions. They stated they would do this in the EU’s White Paper on Sport (2007) because the issue raises a number of points of EU law, including exceptions to ‘free movement’ across the member states.

The study will provide a valuable opportunity for British Swimming to put forward its own thoughts from a sporting perspective and we would welcome our members’ views.  Examples of the types of issues you may want to consider include:-

• There are many non-national athletes swimming at British clubs, should they be excluded from national events?
• Key events may be used for selection purposes.  Could non-national athletes prevent a swimmer from qualifying for selection by preventing them from competing in the finals?
• Is the current approach consistent?
• Non-national athletes have an enormous benefit to the sport in helping to raise standards.  However, is there potential for the demand to compete to be too great as 2012 Olympics approach?

Although the above is not an exhaustive summary of the issues , we would very much like to read your written thoughts on these and any other observations regarding this area.

Young people have just a few days left to secure an ‘incomparable work experience placement’ within swimming.

The Youth Sport Trust and ASA are looking to recruit one young person, who ideally would be between 18 and 25-years-old, to become a Young Official Development Officer within swimming – but they must get their application in by Friday 26th June 2009.

The full-time volunteer Officer would work with the ASA’s staff, local schools, colleges and clubs to support the training and deployment of young people as officials at local, regional and national competitions.

Yvette Heywood, the ASA’s Volunteer Manager, said: “This is a brilliant opportunity for a young person to enhance their contacts within the swimming industry.

“It will look great on their CV and will give them experience of a range of organisational skills, including time management, presentation skills and attending and conferences.”

The role, which will cover approximately 30 hours per week, will begin in September 2009 for 40 weeks.

Expenses of up to £60 a week are available for everyday expenses such as food, travel and subsistence, as well as up to £4,000 towards accommodation expenses.

The ideal candidate would, among other attributes, have strong verbal and written communication skills and demonstrate genuine enthusiasm to work with young people. For a full job specification and more details please CLICK HERE.

The ASA has today launched its ‘challenging and exciting strategy’ for 2009-13, which includes how the national governing body will capitalise on the government’s Free Swimming initiative and the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics being held in London.

The strategy, in conjunction with the ASA’s funding agreement with Sport England, will guide the way the ASA will work and sets down its priorities and targets for everyone to see.

David Sparkes, the ASA’s Chief Executive, said: “Over the next few years we have an unprecedented opportunity to change everyone’s perception of our sport, and encourage more people to swim more often and have more fun doing it, also to make our contribution to a successful Olympic and Paralympic Games in London with a lasting legacy for our sports.

“We have set ourselves some ambitious objectives in our Strategy. These include encouraging more people to swim – and have fun swimming – more often. This will start with creating a magic ‘first’ moment in Learn to Swim programmes and School Swimming and continue through to helping the industry put the customer at the heart of its work. If we get this right more children will learn to swim and the pools will be bursting with swimmers of all ages and we will have changed the culture of the sport.

“We want to drive up the quality of our teachers and coaches and ‘raise the bar’ to ensure the ASA has an appropriately skilled workforce for the whole swimming industry and ensure our affiliated clubs are providing the best quality experience they can. We also plan to see English athletes on the podium at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as using the opportunity to inspire non-athletes to be more active.

The ASA’s newest mascot finally has a name – with nearly 120 people deciding Bubbles was perfect for the smiley orange fish.

The fish is the friendly face of the ASA’s new website ‘Child Power: Your Voice’, which is aimed at children and young people.

Child Power: Your Voice is dedicated to children and young people already involved in swimming, diving, synchronised swimming and water polo and for those who are thinking about getting involved.  CLICK HERE to visit the site.

More than 200 people voted on the name, with the overwhelming majority (56 per cent) going for Bubbles. Fin came in as the second favourite name, followed by Goggles and Chippy.

Now Bubbles has been named, youngsters will be able to talk to him about everything that matters to them via the Child Power: Your Voice website.

Jenni Dearman, the ASA’s National Co-ordinator for Child Safeguarding , said: “It’s great our fish finally has a name, especially as Bubbles has turned out to be such a popular choice!”

Amy Tordoff from Sheffield was one of five people who suggested Bubbles and her name was drawn out of the hat to win a signed T-shirt from Olympic and Paralympic stars.  All those who suggested the name also receive a runner’s up prize.

The new Licensing Scheme for Aquatic Professionals: Teachers and Coaches is being launched today (1st April 2009). To coincide with this, the ASA is offering 500 free licences to its teachers and coaches so they can show they are committed to continuous improvement and professional development.

These individual licences are available on a strictly first-come, first-served basis and all applications must be received by 30th June 2009.

The ASA Licence is a way for teachers and coaches to prove to employers and clubs that they not only hold ASA qualifications (or approved equivalent) and are signed up to a Code of Ethics but are updating their skills by taking teaching and continuing professional development (CPD) courses.

Licence holders, at their request, can also be included on the Register of Aquatic Professionals, which gives employers the chance to search for fully qualified and vetted staff.

The ASA Licence automatically reflects the teacher’s or coaches’ level  of qualification, covers all the aquatic disciplines and is open to both paid and unpaid instructors. 

Melissa Barlow, the ASA’s Workforce Development Manager, said: “The ASA licence is a great way for people to demonstrate to potential employers that they are fully committed to teaching and coaching and with 500 free licences up for grabs there has never been a better time to sign-up.

“The licence lasts for three years as long as teachers and coaches demonstrate their continuing progress in their annual submissions.”

Those people that are already licensed should continue to gain their points for renewal. Once they have successfully renewed their licence on the old scheme they will be transferred to the new scheme.
